SAA Gallery looking good! Salem Arts Festival Press!

The SAA Gallery is looking good, go down and check out the opening show! Thanks to Wendy Snow-Lang for curating and hanging the show.

Henry is still accepting volunteers interested in gallery sitting and selling all of our wonderful materials. You can sign up online or send Henry an email.

This year we will also have "tent" presence outside the Gallery on Thursdays during the Farmers' Market. We will have different work available under the tent. Anyone placing work in the tent must participate and be willing to sell. Same rules for SAA percentage applies. We cannot have our gallery sitters outside since the market brings in substantial crowds.

Salem Arts FestivalThe Salem Arts Festival gets featured in the Gazette. We doubled our numbers during the Salem Arts Festival this year, despite the tricky weather!

Gimme Shelter -
our downtown store ROOST wants your participation!

Design, build and donate a birdhouse to the annual Gimme Shelter birdhouse auction on August 22, 2010. In a "shelter for shelter" fundraiser, your birdhouses will be auctioned to the public at Roost, located at 40 Front Street in downtown Salem.

All proceeds go to the Northeast Animal Shelter. The birdhouse can be functional, or ornamental...ideally both. No design restrictions. It just needs to be able to fit through our door.

The Northeast Animal Shelter (NAS) provides safe shelter, food, and healthcare to rescue animals in the North Shore area. NAS is right here in Salem and is one of New England's largest no-kill animal shelters.

Contact Roost by July 1, 2010 with your intention to submit a birdhouse. Submissions due by August 1, 2010.

S'ART -the SAA online eMagazine

S'Art summer 2009.jpgKeep images and ideas coming to make our next issue a great one. They'll be collector's items one day as the "history of record" of some of the SAA's most notable activities. Remember if you shoot pictures of an event, a workshop or an opening please send JPGs with name, title, medium, size to James Goncalves at james@gardenhead.net. Got an idea for an article? Send it in to EGH.ARTS@gmail.com. We will likely be able to run business card size ads in this or the very next issue.

Call to Artists: Salem Willows Public Art Project

The City of Salem is requesting proposals from area artists to improve the visual appeal of concrete barriers placed at the end of Fort Avenue to separate parking from a sitting/passive recreational area at Salem Willows Park. Successful proposals will consider the placement of the barriers, the Salem Willows community, and Salem's interesting, varied history. There are 10 barriers at the site. Work should be site specific and able to be completed on site.

Find out more here.

Upcoming events for Salem Arts Association

As part of our contract with the city for Artists's Row space we need to host a community event in the Old Town Hall. Mark your calendar for August 5-8. We're going to collaborate with everyone on Artist's Row to utilize both the upstairs and the downstairs. We'll open it up from the Farmer's Market on Thursday night until Sunday evening. If you'd like to help us stage something during that time let us know. Working title is "Artist's Row Fun Fest." First planning meeting is June 22nd at 7 pm at the SAA Gallery. Bring your brainstorming talents! See our upcoming show list to the right!

Also, to keep us connected and working throughout the year two events have been added to our October to April calendar. The Danvers Art Association would like to do a companion show with us and Montserrat College of Art would like to host a lecture/social/workshop for us (think about a topic that would work with Danvers and check out the Montserrat schedule of events and help us pick a great show to attend and have a social event).

Expose yourself!

In Art New England's Artist Directory. Deadline is July 20, 2010. For more information call 617-259-1040 or email: advertising@artnewengland.com

Opportunities to show your work!

SAtv Gallery, Cinema Salem and Cafe Valverde are looking for more art exhibits! Let us know of an idea or concept and we'll help you put together a show at one of the venues. Email: EGH.ARTS@gmail.com.

Please contact our Volunteer Coordinator at volunteer@salemartsassociation.org. Someone will assign you to help with a specific short term need, an event, or a committee.
